How does tutoring with Dare to be Dyslexic help my child?

Dare to be Dyslexic takes a holistic approach and builds a programme with sound and proven reading strategies, spelling approaches and writing activities tailored to your child’s needs.

The one-on-one sessions give your child the freedom to take risks in a safe environment. My sessions teach specific positive mindset strategies that encourage your child to embrace their dyslexia.

Is your tuition only for dyslexic students?

No – All Learner’s Welcome! We cater for ALL learners, our programmes are designed for all students to succeed.

Do I need a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia to attend tuition?

No – You do not need a diagnosis of dyslexia to attend tuition with us.
What works for the dyslexic learner works for all learners!

What services does Dare to be Dyslexic offer?

I offer a variety of programs tailored to your child’s strengths, interests, and based on initial assessment results. These programs are designed to help learners improve their literacy skills and include sessions held in my home.

What happens in the free consultation?

Whānau – this is for you.

The free consultation is a conversation, and it allows me to understand what you want for your child. I will be chatting to your child to find out what they love, what they dislike and what they think about learning. You know your child so well, and your knowledge will also help me to understand what works best for them.

I believe establishing relationships is the most effective way to create success in learning, so this free consultation is set up to do just that.

It’s an opportunity for you to see the resources I use and tell me about yourselves.

It will give you time to go away and think of anything you may have missed, and make your mind up about joining the Dare to be Dyslexic team!

We are unable to make a session? What do we do?

Ring or text me as soon as you know you can’t make it.

Check the Term & Conditions to make sure you are not liable to pay for a missed session. Thank you.

Absence, Cancellation, and Refunds

Consideration will be given for reasons of a family emergency or sickness, and any prepayment to a future session may apply.

2.1 Weekly Payments  advanced payment is to be made within 48 hours prior to every weekly session.

2.3 Confirmation of Term Tuition, Holiday Sessions, Workshops, and Screening: Your tuition/sessions will not be deemed confirmed until the payment is paid, and the enrolment form is signed, completed, and returned.

2.4 If the Tutor cancels a session for any reason, Dare to be Dyslexic agrees to refund the pre-paid amount for that session or may apply that to a future session.

2.5 Dare to be Dyslexic reserves the right to cancel any programme or Workshop due to insufficient enrolment. Upon cancellation, a full refund will be issued.

How do we know what my child is doing in your sessions?

You will receive an initial assessment report outlining results and future goals for your child.

A record of a personal “success” chart is completed at the end of each session and is filled in with their successes. Once the chart is complete, it is sent home for the whānau to celebrate (around every 15 weeks).

Certificates are awarded for achievement.

You can ask at any time what we are working on and how you can support this.

What resources will we need if we are learning in person?

Just a clear file and a water bottle.

The tuition invoice fee will include a workbook.

What resources will we need if we are learning online?

You will need access to either Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and Google docs.

You will need to have paper, pens, and a small whiteboard ready to use during the sessions. A clear file to store any additional work may be helpful.

Part of our session will require reading. Where possible, I will scan the pages before the lesson. However, you may be asked to provide the actual book – utilising your local library could help with this.

How can we help at home? And are we expected to?

Helping at home is a great idea.

Reading for a short period each night is wonderful. I will provide tips that will help your child, and these will be based on their initial reading assessment.

Spelling practice – I know it sounds boring, but I think it would be a fantastic idea for your child to teach you how THEY are learning to spell!

How long will my child need tutoring for?

Every child will differ. This will depend on the goals you have for your child, the commitment to the sessions and additional work if it is set.

I will create achievable goals based on their initial assessment. However, it is essential to understand that you may not see the results instantly with a one-hour per week session. It takes time to build and consolidate new learning.

How will we know they are progressing?

Their personalised ‘success’ chart should indicate their progress.

Listen to your child read, support their spelling, take an interest in their writing, and you will enjoy their successes.

If I am concerned about your child’s progress, I will be in touch.

Do you set additional homework?

I encourage all learners to read each night, if they are not too tired. However, if they are tired I encourage you to read to your child.

If requested, I will send home your child’s spelling words on a personalised worksheet. This has been incredibly successful with students in the past.

My child is struggling with spelling and reading homework – will their school homework be a part of their tutoring?

The great thing about having a personalised programme is that we can always discuss the best ways to support your child’s reading and writing at home.

If including your child’s school homework is something you think would help, there may be ways we can make it happen. Just ask!

We no longer wish to receive tuition. What do we do now?

Thanks for being part of the ‘Dare to be Dyslexic’ team. I request seven days’ notice in writing, and we can finish our contract.

If you require a final assessment report, you will need to factor in the last lesson for the assessments to take place. You will receive a final report following this.
